Prisoner kills three policemen in Baghdad

Published Updated

IraqBAGHDAD: A prisoner grabbed a gun while being interrogated at a Baghdad detention centre and shot dead three policemen, including a brigadier general, an interior ministry official said on Sunday.

The shooting occurred in a prison run by the counter-terrorism unit of the interior ministry, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"During interrogation, an inmate managed to grab the gun of a policeman. He opened fire and killed a brigadier general, a first lieutenant and another officer before he was shot dead," the official said.

The incident came as security was tightened in Iraq where authorities fear reprisal from the local branch of Al-Qaeda after the death of Osama bin Laden on May 2 in a US military operation in Pakistan.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, during a visit to Tunisia on Saturday, said it was "likely" that Al-Qaeda could plan attacks in Iraq to avenge Osama bin Laden's death.
