ISLAMABAD: The Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the incidents of communal violence in several villages in India's Uttar Pardesh state during last few days.
A spokesperson of the OIC Secretary General, in a statement received here, said according to initial reports, over 28 persons had been killed and hundreds of Muslim families fled their homes and villages, and had been made subject to intimidation and violence.
The OIC urged the Indian authorities to restore calm and protect the lives, property and places of worship of Muslim citizens and bring the perpetrators of violence to justice.
The spokesman regretted that the incident appeared to have been the worst incidence of communal violence in more than 20 years since the destruction of the Babri Masjid in 1992.
He also expressed concern that the communal tension between Hindus and Muslims might spread to other regions of the country if it were not addressed properly.
The OIC is willing to lend its support to all serious endeavours to bring peace and harmony between the two communities in India, said the spokesman.
