Democracy has taken roots in Pakistan: Kundi

Faisal-Karim-Kundi_400ISLAMABAD: Democracy has taken roots in Pakistan and all the political forces in the Parliament are collectively working for the betterment of masses.

Acting Speaker of the National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi said this while talking to a US-Congressional delegation, which called on him in the Parliament House on Tuesday.

Kundi said that frequent derailment of democracy in the country had not allowed the democracy to flourish.

He said that the present parliament comprised of progressive forces, which were collectively engaged for strengthening of democracy and betterment of the masses.

He said that during the last three years of the incumbent parliament, remarkable legislation had been done mainly concerning women, children social sector and law and order. The contribution of young and women MPs in the legislation is praiseworthy, he said.

Kundi also apprised the delegation of the working of the National Assembly and its standing committees.

He informed the delegation that Standing Committees were playing an important role in carrying out an effective accountability of the executive.

He said that chairmanship of Public Accounts Committee and other important standing committees had been assigned to opposition.

He said that the visit of the Congressional delegation would help them understand the working of standing committees in Parliament of Pakistan besides enhancing cooperation between legislatures of both the countries.

He stressed the need for frequent exchange of such delegations.

The Head of delegation thanked the Acting Speaker for providing an opportunity to build understanding between the two legislatures. He agreed for enhancing such interactions.

He appreciated the performance of women and young legislators.
