imageISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned hearing in the high treason case against former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf till May 22.

The three-member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja resumed hearing of various identical petitions seeking initiation of a treason case against Pervez Musharraf.

During the course of proceedings, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja remarked that the viewpoint of the parliament was crucial to the case. The parliament had already legislated punishment for treason and the Federal Interior Secretary must be the complainant in treason cases.

The bench observed that a possibility was there that the newly elected government might take a different stance from that of the caretakers over the issue of initiating a treason case against the former president.

The bench hoped that the process of transfer of power to the newly elected government would be completed in a short time and it would be quite important to get the stance of the federal government over the issue.

The caretakers had refused to file treason charges against the former President arguing that the elected government may opt for another plea in the current matter.

A.K. Dogar, counsel for Moulvi Iqbal Haider, one of the petitioners in the matter and Ahmed Raza Qasuri, counsel for Pervez Musharraf appeared before the court and argued on the case.
