Nigeria leader says unrest recalls events before civil war

LAGOS: Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said in an address to the nation Thursday that deadly post-election unrest was a reminder of events that led to the 1967 civil war, adding security had been reinforced nationwide.

"If anything at all, these acts of mayhem are sad reminders of the events which plunged our country into 30 months of an unfortunate civil war," said Jonathan, who was on Monday declared winner of the elections.

He pledged that governorship polls scheduled for Tuesday would go forward.
