ISLAMABAD: Pakistan appointed senior diplomat Mohammad Sadiq as the new special envoy for Afghanistan, with a view to step up its efforts as facilitator in the Afghan peace process, aimed at restoration of peace and stability in the war-torn country.

The newly-appointed special envoy on Saturday met with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and held consultations with regard to the ongoing efforts for restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, matters pertaining to Afghan peace process as well as regional peace and stability came under discussion.

Talking to him, Foreign Minister Qureshi asserted that lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan was indispensable for the economic prosperity and development of the entire region.

He said Pakistan sincerely played its constructive role in Afghan peace process, which was now being acknowledged by the international community, adding Islamabad would continue to play its vigorous role in maintaining regional peace and stability. "Pakistan, while fulfilling its shared responsibility, has sincerely played a conciliatory role in the Afghan peace process, which is being appreciated all over the world today," Qureshi added.

The foreign minister also congratulated Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq on his appointment as special envoy for Afghanistan and gave special instructions for actively pursuing the ongoing efforts for the restoration of peace in the war-torn country. He hoped that the appointment of a highly-experienced diplomat like Sadiq to this important post would also help further strengthen Pakistan-Afghan relations.

Mohammad Sadiq, ex-secretary national security and Pakistan's former ambassador to Afghanistan, is a seasoned career diplomat. He had earlier served in key diplomatic positions in Washington, Beijing, and Brussels.
