SYDNEY: Australia's international merchandise imports on a balance of payments basis fell 3 percent in seasonally adjusted terms to A$20.6 billion ($21.3 billion) in September, compared to A$21.22 billion in August.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday said imports of capital goods fell by 8 percent, or A$465 million, in September driven by a drop in machinery and industrial equipment.
Imports of intermediate goods dipped 1 percent, while consumption goods fell 6 percent. Imports of non-monetary gold jumped 70 percent, or A$281 million.
In original terms, imports fell 11 percent to A$19.29 billion in September, partly due to a sharp fall in machinery imports.
