ISLAMABAD: Islamabad became a city of broken hearts on Wednesday night when India crushed the Pakistani team in the semi-final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Cricket-crazy fans watching the match at homes, restaurants and on big screens, installed in every nook and corner of the city, felt dejected as their dreams to see the national team returning home victorious were shattered by the defeat.
Before the much-awaited fixture started, spirits were very high. People had made special arrangements to enjoy the match. Big screens had been installed in every nook and corner of the Capital. But following the loss, people went back to their homes with slouched shoulders and grim faces.
However despite the defeat, several people were of the view that keeping in view the recent outfield controversies, Pakistan outfit did well.
"Look we entered into the mega event without our two main bowlers, Muhammad Amir and Muhammad Asif, yet we managed to reach in the semi-final," said Nawaz a student, who along with a group of friends had come at F-9 Park to watch the match on a big screen, installed by Capital Development Authority.
"Hats off to India, they played a better game," remarked one of his friends.
"You've got to be proud that a team from the Sub-continent will win the Cup," said another.
"I am upset at the outcome of the match. 260 was not a big total but our batsmen failed to chase that target," said Rana Khalid, another youth.
"It would have been a dream comes true for us. But it's a game. One team wins and the other loses," Hussain, a government servant said.
