A team of seven Chinese engineers visited Sukkur Barrage and reviwed its off taking canals as well as the 66 gates. The team was briefed by Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Department Wali Mohammad Naich, Executive Engineer of Sukkur Barrage, Aftab Khoso and Assistant Executive Engineer, Sattar Sario. The visitors were shown the structure and maps of Sukkur Barrage on a laptop. They were informed that the barrage was built in 1836 for 900,000 cusecs of water and its capacity was later increased to 1.5 million cusecs.
Concerned officials briefed the members of the delegation about the impact of the recent floods on the barrage. Later talking to the media, Pheng Mingo said that the delegation had arrived on the request of the Pakistan government to monitor its irrigation system and the damaged embankments. He said that the recent floods had damaged the structures of Sukkur, Kotri and Guddu barrages.
According to the Sukkur Barrage officials, the Chinese engineers have committed to prepare a report after the inspection of barrages and protective bunds in the province. "It was after this that it would be decided from where to start the work and what machinery would be required for the purpose, said the officials.
