FRANKFURT: The leading German airline, Lufthansa said it resumed indirect flights to Tokyo on Thursday, after initially planning to halt its services to the Japanese capital until next Monday.
"We decided to to resume from today our two daily flights to Tokyo," via Seoul, a Lufthansa spokesman told AFP in reference to service from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.
The carrier had begun redirecting flights to Nagoya and Osaka on March 15 owing to the threat of nuclear radiation in the Japanese capital from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
"We have taken a big step back towards normality, but we are not there yet," the spokesman said.
Lufthansa will continue to serve Japan via Seoul as opposed to flying there directly as it did before the massive earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the country.
Meanwhile, an air freighter from the carrier's Lufthansa Cargo unit was carrying 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid including blankets from Frankfurt to Tokyo via Moscow to help people who lost their homes in the March 11 disaster.
That flight was co-organised by the European Commission and contained material donated by Denmark, Lithuania and the Netherlands, a statement said.
