To deal with coronavirus, the Punjab government has decided to close all markets, shopping malls and restaurants throughout Punjab from March 22 to 24 while shops selling essential items are exempted. In this connection, the Punjab home department issued a notification on Saturday. It states, "In view of expert's advice regarding social distancing measures and to avoid public contact over the long weekend (March 22 and 24), all markets, shopping malls and restaurants shall remain closed with effect from 9 pm Saturday till 9 am Tuesday." However, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Momin Agha said this order is not applicable to pharmacies, dispensaries and clinics, grocery stores, karyana stores, bakeries, atta chakkis, tandoors, milk shops, auto workshops and petrol pumps, chicken and meat shops, fruit and vegetable shops, and all kinds of mandis, including grain, fruit and vegetable. "Moreover, takeaway/home delivery from restaurants shall be permitted," he added.
He observed that there has been increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the province as well as Pakistan which may have devastating effects on human lives. "Hence, it is mandatory to take all possible measures to contain the further spread of coronavirus on war footings," he added.
"The current situations in Punjab warrants for immediate preventive and precautionary measures in order to ensure public safety and health, contain the spread of coronavirus, save precious human lives, and maintain peace and tranquility in the province." Meanwhile in a press conference, Punjab CM announced that shopping malls and picnic spots will remain closed throughout the province as coronavirus cases continues to emerge in Punjab and other parts of the country. He appealed to the masses to stay indoors so that they could be safe from the coronavirus. "This is not a lockdown. The logic behind the decision is to maintain social distancing," he added.
