British wheat exports fell sharply during November but remained ahead of last season's pace, customs data showed on Monday.

Wheat exports for the month totalled 67,706 tonnes, sharply down from the prior month's 257,338 tonnes.

Dealers said there had been concerns that Britain might leave the European Union without a trade deal at the end of October which provided an incentive bring forward exports.

Exports to EU destinations fell to 36,206 tonnes in November from 225,820 tonnes a month earlier while shipments to non-EU destinations were barely changed at 31,500 tonnes versus 31,518 during October.

Cumulative wheat exports for the 2019/20 season, which started on July 1, were 741,546 tonnes, up from 134,209 tonnes in the same period a year earlier.

Wheat exports are expected to increase this season, with production rising nearly 20% to a four-year high of 16.22 million tonnes

Imports of wheat into Britain during November totalled 58,242 tonnes, down from the prior month's 74,989 tonnes.

Cumulative wheat imports for the season total 435,743 tonnes, sharply down from 1.04 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier.
