KARACHI: The official price for milk supplied to consumers in Karachi has been fixed at Rs.70 per litre and these rates will be applicable till November, that is during the summers 2012, said Commissioner of Karachi, Roshan Ali Shaikh on Monday.
Earlier chairing a meeting with representatives of dairy farm owners, karachi milk wholesallers association, Karachi milk retailers and consumers' rights protection organizations, the Karachi Commissioner rejected the proposed raise of Rs.15 in the rates of milk that till recently was avaialble to the citizens at Rs.60 per litre.
The meeting that was also attended by officials belonging to provincial departments of animal and husbandry and bureau of supply and prices unanimously agreed that on the basis of ground realities dairy owners would be allowed to supply milk to retailers at the rate of Rs.64.50 per litre and charge Rs.1.25 profit margin for each litre that otherwise, due to recent increase in the cost of fuel and other utilities, costs them Rs.63.25.
Similalry, wholesalers have been allowed to keep a profit of Rs.2.50 per litre and sell the product to the retailers at Rs.67 per litre. The retailers will keep a profit of Rs.3 per litre and charge Rs.70 per litre from end users, that is the general public.
Commissioner of Karachi, Roshan Ali Shaikh warned that earning any extra penny against the prices fixed for milk in Karachi would be strictly dealt with and profiteers will not only be fined but can also be put behind bars.
