RIYADH: The Saudi defence minister, Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, left Tuesday on an official visit to Britain, a major supplier of weapons to the oil-rich kingdom, the official SPA news agency reported.

It gave no details on the meetings in London of Prince Salman, who was appointed defence minister in October after the death of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz who held the post.

Saudi Arabiain 2006 ordered 72 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters in a deal valued at $32.9 billion. The multi-role aircraft is built by a consortium of European firms in whichBritain's BAE Systems has a 33-percent share.
