Mazari asks UN to form commission of inquiry on India’s violations in Kashmir

Minister for Humans Rights Shireen Mazari has written a letter to the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner For Human Rights, requesting for the formation of a commission of inquiry on Kashmir regarding India's violation of international laws by using cluster bombs on innocent civilians across the Line of Control (LoC).

The minister shared on Monday her letter written to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet. in which she has called Bachelet's attention to India's usage of cluster bombs on July 30 and July 31 at Neelum Valley. Mazari wrote that by using cluster ammunition, India was actively violating international laws by specifically targeting the civilian population in the Neelum Valley.

Mazari has further requested the high commissioner to remind India of its obligations under humanitarian law. The letter further says that India should be reminded specifically of the duty to protect civilians and distinguish between the civilian populations and civilian object, on one hand, and combatants and military objectives on the other.

"I request your Office to immediately take note and act on the new Indian government's policy of increasing the military action against Kashmiris in Indian occupied Kashmir," the minister's letter concluded.
