KARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi, Roshan Ali Sheikh has directed the deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of all five districts of the metropolis to initiate a crackdown against sheesha smokers and sheesha smoking joints, in compliance to notification issued on Monday by Sindh Home Department, under which ban has been imposed on sheesha smoking, under Section 144, in the province.
The Karachi Commissioner expressing his gratitude to the provincial government for introducing the much needed ban said this was urgently needed due to increasing public complaints and media reports about growing indulgence of youth, particularly students, both girls and boys, into sheesha smoking, a serious health hazard.
"We had also been constantly receiving complaints from parents worried about vulnerability of their children getting hooked to sheesha smoking that was also paving way for their indulgence to hard drugs," said the city commissioner in a meeting at his office.
Roshan Ali Sheikh said parents were equally concerned that the craze for the sheesha had encouraged their children to even bunk their classes and this was not acceptable to any section of the society.
Karachi Commissioner urged the deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners to continue with the crackdown and not to succumb to any pressure whatsoever till all the sheesha joints were closed for good in Karachi.
"You are equally responsible to ensure that these may not disappear under any other garb or pretext," said the commissioner, Roshan Ali Sheikh.
