Huawei suffers another blow as it gets banned from using microSD cards

After being banned by Google, Intel and Qualcomm, Huawei is now also banned from using SD and microSD cards in its future smartphones.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is now barred from being a member of the SD Association – the trade group that agrees upon standardized specs for SD and microSD cards. This mean that the smartphone manufacturer is no longer allowed to put official SD or microSD card support in its future phones or laptops, reported 9to5Google. However, the cards will continue to work on existing Huawei hardware.

Huawei responds to losing Android access, gets temporary reprieve from ban

The SD Association (SDA) told Android Authority that Huawei’s removal from the group was due to US President Donald Trump’s executive order. However, Huawei has prepared for a backup too with its own proprietary Nano Memory Cards, which are physically smaller than microSD ones.

Commenting on this news, Huawei told Nikkei Asian Review, “Huawei values its relationships with all partners and associations around the world and understands the difficult situation they are in. We are hopeful this situation will be resolved and are working to find the best solution.”

Trump’s ban previously led to Google cut off its ties with Huawei, losing access to Android. Later, companies including Intel, Qualcomm, ARM, and Broadcom too followed suit to stop working with Huawei.
