EU experts to stay in Athens 'next two years,' says boss

Published Updated

eu-building_BRUSSELS: EU civil servants working in Athens to help guide the Greek government's economic reform efforts in exchange for a bailout are likely to stay for the next two years, the head of a monitoring mission said Friday.

Horst Reichenbach, who leads a team of 45 officials sent out by the European Commission, said no fixed deadline had been set for his task force to return.

"The Commission and member states are prepared to continue support as long as Greece wants it," he said.

"For the next two years, (there is) still a lot to be done," he said.

The scope and extent of Brussels monitoring of the Greek government's spending decisions were the subject of intense political debate during negotiations on the second Greek bailout finally agreed this month.

German and Dutch suggestions that Athens should be placed under tutelage caused outrage in Greece.

But last week European Central Bank head Mario Draghi also said he wanted EU authorities to install "permanent resident advisors" in all eurozone or EU countries facing debt difficulties.
