KARACHI: The Turnitin software checks for potentially unoriginal content by comparing submitted papers to several databases using a proprietary algorithm. It scans its own databases and also has licensing agreements with large academic proprietary databases, said Assistant Professor, Business Administration MAJU Syed Arshad Hussain while addressing 6th Turnitin workshop, said a statement on Thursday.
He said that Turnitin is a Commercial, Internet-based plagiarism service launched in 1997.
He said that Universities and High Schools typically buy licenses to use the software as a service (SaaS) website, which checks submitted documents against its database and content of other websites with the aim of identifying plagiarism.
He informed that result can identify similarities with existing sources, and can also be used in formative assessment to help studentslearn to avoid plagiarism and improve their writing.
He said that students may be required to submit work on Turnitinas Requirement of taking a certain course or class.
He further said that the software has been a source of controversy, with some students, some critics have alleged that use of this proprietary software violets educational privacy as well as international intellectual-property laws, and exploits student's workfor commercial purposes by permanently storing them in Turnitin's privately held database.
