ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan was informed that the purpose of new local government system was real transfer of powers at the grassroots level, making the people's representatives more powerful and ensuring better and sustainable delivery.
The prime minister was chairing at a high level meeting about the local government system in Punjab. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, Law Minister Muhammad Basharat Raja, Minister for Housing Mahmood ur Rashid, Health Minister Dr Yasmeen Rashid, Punjab Chief Secretary, provincial secretaries of the departments concerned and high officials.
The prime minister was informed about making the elected representatives at tehsil and local levels powerful in the new local government system, making the administrative structure effective, collection of taxes , provision of education, health, water and sanitation and facilities of solid waster management and others.
The prime minister was told that in the new local government system transparency in distribution of development funds were not only being ensured but transfer of funds from provincial level to tehsil and local level local was being ensured.
Under the new local government system, capacity of local governments would be improved so that implementation of municipal laws would be made effective, the prime minister was informed.
He was told that a clear and concrete procedure would be introduced to counter crimes and under which better liaisons and cooperation between police and people would be promoted.
The officials informed the prime minister that proposed laws for the new local government system had been prepared, which would be presented in the provincial assembly for approval very soon.
The prime minister was also informed about the proposed time-frame for Punchaiati and elections of the local government system .
Earlier at the onset of meeting, Fateha was offered for the departed soul of father of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar.
