SUKKUR: A series of programmes were organised by the government and non-governmental organisations in connection with the International Women's Day here on Thursday.
Like other cities of the world, Sukkur, Khairpur Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore and other districts also hosted seminars, workshops, walks, conferences and other events.
A number of NGOs working for the restoration of women's rights organised programmes to highlight the issues confronting women in urban and rural areas of the country and the problems faced by the women world over.
The discussions and debates were aimed at creating awareness in the masses on the women's role in society and finding ways and means to provide maximum relief to the weaker section by ensuring restoration of its due rights.
A group of NGOs' activists staged a march from Pakistan Chowk to the Press Club, Kashmore to mark the International Women's Day. The participating NGOs included the Inter Global Human Development Society (IGHDS), Help Each Others, Right to Play, SRSO, Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO).
Speaking at the end of the march, General Manager IGHDS Ms Asima Rajput said that the women of Sindh, like their counterparts in other provinces, were deprived of their inherent rights.
She said that feudalism and jirga system and the black custom of Karo-kari (honour killing) were prevalent in one or the other form throughout Pakistan. She said that the women were being victimised through the misuse of the different Ordinances and demanded abolition of anti- women laws and customs and giving equal rights to the women.
Osho Uzma of the Help Each Others (HEP) said that the women were being treated as a property and added that time had come to emancipate them. She said that the society would have to change its attitude towards the women and added that inherent rights of the women should be guaranteed and protected.
Speaking on the occasion, PPP MPA Rai Naz Bozdar and others demanded repeal of discriminatory laws against women. They said that protection should be provided to the working women, particularly the peasants, and those being held hostage by the landlords should be recovered.
