ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday said the new government had an ambitious people-centric agenda for the socio-economic development of Pakistan which was driving its  foreign policy.

Talking to a delegation from Cornell University, US, which called on him, the President said broad-based socio-economic reforms were aimed at creating sustained growth that would lead to greater employment opportunities for the youth.

The President, while highlighting importance of the region, said it had historical market connectivity. With the completion of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, the region offered unprecedented potential for regional trade that would be a key driver for economic growth.

He underscored that the government was committed to adopting an open door policy and it had recently introduced a more liberalized visa regime to welcome visitors and businessmen to Pakistan.

He stated the government would continue implementing reforms to make Pakistan a business and tourism friendly country. He underscored that the United States, being one of Pakistan’s largest investors and trade partners, could also explore tremendous business opportunities in the country.

He also highlighted the diversity of Pakistani diaspora that had become a productive part of the American society.

The President reiterated Pakistan’s desire for peace in the region and highlighted its sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. He stated that Pakistan would be a partner with US for peace in Afghanistan. He also welcomed President Trump’s desire to work with Pakistan in this regard. He apprised the delegation that Pakistan has shown restraint to India’s irresponsible behavior after recent Pulwama Attack, in Kashmir. He also urged the US to play its part in persuading India to reciprocate Pakistan’s repeated peace gestures.

In the end, the President expressed his hope that such tours would provide first-hand knowledge about Pakistan’s culture, people, civil society and institutions.
