Business Recorder op-ed writer Ikram Sehgal in his write-up titled "'Judicial' martial law" has concluded that "CJ Saqib Nisar promises that monarchy-based democracy will not be allowed to happen; hopefully he and his brother justices will insist on the correct interpretation and implementation of the laws of the land. The current CoAS (and his two predecessors) have ruled out any military rule. Without this 'Sword of Damocles" hanging over our heads we could go straight ahead to improve our political set-up. Whether the forthcoming elections are conducted without rigging will be the "acid test" for democracy. Can (and will) the ECP bar those who do not qualify in relation to paras 62 and 63 of the Constitution?"
The writer seems to have shown his deep-rooted hatred for politicians. Isn't it time for our intellectuals to stop bashing politicians on the eve of general elections? Although elections are not the best test of democracy because elections are manipulated on all levels, people don't want 'judicial' martial law at any cost. But 'judicial' martial law cannot be a solution.
