The World Water Day-2018 will be observed today with a resolve to raise awareness and advocate the sustainable management apart from highlighting improvement in water and sanitation facilities. The day provides an opportunity to learn more about the water-related issues. The day is celebrated to focus attention on the importance of water and water resources, particularly the freshwater. The day reminded us to promote water conservation and understand its importance in environment, health, agriculture and other fields.
The first World Water Day was observed in 1993 and since then every year it focuses on a different theme. To mark the day, different organisations will hold functions to highlight the importance of water for survival. Centre for Water informatics & Technology in the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is holding a panel discussion to mark the day. Dr Sohail Naqvi Vice Chancellor LUMS, Mohammad Mahmood, Secretary Agriculture Punjab, Dr Yousaf Zafar, Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council, Hammad Naqvi CEO WWF - Pakistan, Dr Abid Sulari - Executive Director, Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Dr Abubakar Muhammad - Director Centre for Water informatics & Technology LUMS will speak.
"Access to safe drinking water is one of the basic human rights but there is also a need to create awareness among the benefiting communities regarding judicious use of this blessing," experts said. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif in his message said that water is the most important part of life on this universe which is also essential for animals and plants. "Pakistan can be made a developed country by optimally utilizing its water resources, he said, adding: "Pakistan is blessed with best water resources along with agricultural and mineral bounties. This water asset can be best utilized to further strengthen the agricultural economy."
He said clean drinking water is imperative for human life and provision of clean drinking water to the people is important part of governmental priorities. The Punjab government is working on different projects of providing clean drinking water to the masses. An effective policy has been designed and its implementation has also been ensured, he said.
