Supreme Court on Monday ordered Attorney General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali to pay a Rs 20,000 fine over his failure to appear before the court for arguments in response to pleas filed against the amended election law. Appearing before a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana sought adjournment of the case on grounds that the Attorney General was in Lahore to attend funeral prayer of Asma Jahangir, former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and veteran human rights activist.
To which, the court observed that everyone is saddened over the demise of Asma Jahangir but the pressing issue must not be ignored, as Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar asked AGP to appear during the course of the day. Over Ali's failure to appear before the court till evening, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar issued directive to him to pay a Rs 20,000 fine from his pocket, saying the amount would be deposited to Fatimid Foundation. Later, the hearing of the matter was adjourned till February 14.
