Qazi Wajid, one of the senior most radio and television actor of the country, passed away here on Sunday. He was 87. He has left behind a widow, a daughter and grand children along with a large number of his admirers from across the country to mourn his death. Wajid, complaining discomfort and tightness in chest was taken to a private hospital Saturday night where he left for his eternal abode.
It was largely a peaceful death, said his family members and concerned doctors. The octogenarian performer par excellence had begun his career as a junior artiste at Radio Pakistan in early 1950s and soon carved a niche for himself as an astute broadcaster.
His character in Hamid Mian Kay Yahaan, relayed every Sunday morning had remained one of the most favourite radio dramas among the listeners for almost two decades. There were several other outstanding performance of Qazi Wajid that won hearts of the people and guided his young colleagues to use their vocal chords in a manner that put live to situations and characters.
Wajid, like several of his colleagues at the Radio Pakistan, was little reluctant to deliver as television artist. He was among first of those who performed for Pakistan Television, Karachi centre.
His TV career that began in 1968 continued till his death in 2018, as many of his fresh work can still be watched in a series of plays being aired by various TV channels. His first television performance as Nausha in Khuda ki Basti is still remembered by many and this was followed by series of performances for PTV including Zair, Zabar Paish, Un Kahi, Kiran Kahani and so-forth.
During this period he also clinched several awards including Pride of Performance in 1988, Qazi Wajid, one of the rare breeds of professionals that is fast vanishing was not only extremely popular among people but equally respected by his colleagues and co-professionals for his dedication towards the profession, humility and decency. The seasoned actor was laid to rest after Maghrib prayers, said his family members.
