Workshop on 'drug control' held

Published February 1, 2018 Updated February 1, 2018 12:00am

A three-day workshop on the implementation of the recommendations of United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on World Drug Problem was held here on Wednesday wherein different options were explored to tackle the problem. The follow-up period to the UNGASS on drugs in 2016 is the time to translate the commitments made in the outcome document into concrete actions. The General Assembly has adopted, at its special session, the outcome document, containing over 100 operational recommendations.
These commitments are to be implemented by member states the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, the UN system entities as well as other stake holders the participants of the workshop were informed.
The member states have resolved to share with the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) timely information on progress made in the implementation of the recommendations contained in the UNGASS outcome document. The Special Session was held shortly after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which serves as a framework for all development efforts in the coming years. The UNGASS in its outcome document welcomed the 2030 Agenda and recognized that efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and to effectively address the world drug problem were complementary and mutually reinforcing.
To support the implementation of the UNGASS outcome, to analyze the recommendations regarding their specific relevance to the region and to translate them into concrete activities, the workshop was organized jointly by the UNODC and the Ministry of Narcotics Control.
