The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has started investigating a complaint filed against Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Asad Qaiser for his alleged involvement in massive irregularities and accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income. The sources in NAB told Business Recorder that the decision regarding approval of complaint verification was taken by NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in a meeting of the executive board.
He said that in this case, Qaiser has been accused of misusing authority, making illegal appointments and having assets beyond known sources of income. The complaint against KP provincial assembly speaker was received by NAB Peshawar from a native of his hometown Swabi and the regional office sent it to NAB headquarters. The sources said before initiating a formal investigation, all the complaints against Qaiser will be verified, and then a formal corruption reference will be filed against him if the complaints against him are proved true.
In light of letters written to NAB, Asad Qaiser shared a 14-marla house with his four brothers, but now owns a five-kanal bungalow worth Rs 50 million, said sources. The letter further alleges that the KP Assembly speaker has had a house worth Rs 350 million built on 35 kanals at Bani Gala. The official further stated that there are also allegations against Qaisar of receiving 30 per cent kickbacks in different development projects, and that there is a clear difference between the speaker's assets and his sources of income.
When contacted, MNA Aqibullah, the brother of speaker KP provincial assembly, said that all the allegations against his brother and family are politically motivated to malign Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
"Asad Qaiser has rejected all the allegations in a press conference and we will go after all those who are making such attempts to malign our party by involving the Speaker," he added. "We are going to challenge all these allegations in the court and our lawyers will soon file a writ petition so that all those behind this drama will be exposed," he added.
