Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority spokesman has clarified a news item appeared inBusiness Recorder on March 1, 2017 entitled "MoW&P asked to submit report about Wapda dues against Sindh govt." wherein it has been reported that 'The National Assembly Standing Committee on Government Assurance ordered the Ministry of Water and Power to submit its report about the outstanding dues of WAPDA against Sindh government and details of its settlement.'
The spokesman has clarified that the issue of outstanding dues does not relate to WAPDA, therefore, it is factually incorrect. He has made it clear that subsequent to bifurcation of its power wing in 2007 in the backdrop of power sector reforms, WAPDA only deals with construction of dams and hydropower projects and operation and maintenance of the existing hydel power stations. Except hydel generation in public sector, all other matters of electricity from generation to distribution now relate to various public sector companies such as Power Generation Companies (GENCOs), National Transmission and Dispatch Company and DISCOs. Hence, the issue of outstanding dues relates to concerned DISCO of Sindh, which is functioning independently and WAPDA has no relationship with it whatsoever. Thus, naming WAPDA in the matter, that has nothing to do with WAPDA's domain, appears to be based on misunderstanding, he added.-PR
