The sub-committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms received 600 proposals today (Wednesday) which seek unanimous electoral reforms with greater autonomy and independence for the Election Commission. The committee which met for its 76th session at Parliament House reviewed 57 recommendations out of the 600 submitted to the panel by political parties and independent institutions.
Law Minister Zahid Hamid, who chaired the meeting, later told journalists that the committee has done all the work and the remaining proposals would also be approved through complete consensus. He said that the committee also agreed to expedite the process and would hold meetings twice or thrice a week so that a final report is approved as soon as possible.
He said that the committee members, who represent all parliamentary parties, want the Election Commission to be made more independent and autonomous. He added that the matter of financial autonomy for the Election Commission is before the committee.
The minister said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has submitted 85 proposals. The Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted its own proposals with the committee, he added. Dr Shireen Mazari, who represents the PTI there, said that the committee is making efforts to strengthen the Election Commission and to ensure the holding of free and fair elections through implementation of comprehensive reforms.
