Provincial higher education minister, Syed Raza Ali Gillani has said that a comprehensive reforms programme is underway to develop the higher education sector according to needs of the 21st century, so that the country could progress through human resource development. He said that for this purpose, research based activities are being fully encouraged and the teachers are provided capacity building opportunities.
He said this while presiding over a meeting at the office of Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) here on Thursday. Chairman Dr M. Nizam-ud-Din, representatives of higher education department and a 4-member team of British Council were also present on the occasion.
The meeting was told that the British Council was collaborating with the HED for achieving the goals of different projects including chief minister's roadmap program, faculty development program and Lahore Knowledge Park. It noted that the consummate human development is basis of national development, and the higher education institutions play key role in developing students as youth leaders.
Gillani informed the meeting that a teachers training plan has been devised by the government to improve capacity of teachers, and noted that curriculum development is equally important. He said that Shehbaz Sharif Merit Scholarship has been launched with Rs 400 million, and added that Rs 200 million are provided for domestic and foreign trainings of teachers. He said that all the boards of intermediate and secondary education in the Punjab have been automated. Community colleges program has been launched in four selected colleges, he added. Similarly, 138 colleges are being established in different districts with an amount of Rs 2147 million. These steps would help to improve the quality standards; he added and said that Lahore Knowledge Park project will help to proportionate the higher education with the international needs of the 21st century as Pakistani students will get world class education.
