Table Tennis tournament in connection with the 38th National Day of the Iran got under way with the collaboration of Counsel General of Iran Consulate Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Writers and KP Table Tennis Association here at it premises on Wednesday.
Legendary Qamar Zaman and former Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Sports MPA Shagufta Malik, Consul General Muhammad Baqir Beigi, Dr Jehangir Khan Khalil, officials and 40 players including 16 boys, 12 girls and 12 special players, large number of other guests were also present.
In his welcome address, Muhammad Bagir Beigi said that the event is meant for strengthening brotherly relations between Iran and Pakistan. He also lauded KP SWA and KP TTA for organising the event. He said through sports and exchange of players in various games including Table Tennis between the two countries would give ample exposure to the players of Iran and Pakistan.
He assured the players that they would be further supported in their visit to Iran and Iranian players would come to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is for the first time in the history of any of the Consulate that it is organizing a sports event in connection with the National Day celebration of Iran. He also thanked the players and guests for attending the 38th anniversary of the Revolution of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In her speech, MPA Shagufta Malik appreciated the Consul General of Iran for holding and supporting sports event inside the Iranian Consulate Peshawar for the first time. She expressed the hope that such event would be regularly organised in future as well besides exchanges of players between Pakistan and Iran would also benefit our youth.
Former World Champion Qamar Zaman termed it a unique event on the National Day of Iran. He also appreciated the Consul General of Iran in Peshawar for initiating the Championship wherein 40 players are taking part. Qamar Zaman also assured Muhammad Baqir Beigi for his support to Iran in the field of squash as well.
Earlier, Qamar Zaman, MPA Shagufta Malik, Mr. Muhammad Baqir Beigi, Secretary General KP Table Tennis Association Kifayat Ullah Orakzai, President KP Sports Writers Association Jehanzeb Siddique formally inaugurated the Championship by cutting the tape. On this occasion, National Anthems of Pakistan and Iran were played. Mr. Muhammad Bagir awarded shields to Qamar Zaman and MPA Shagufta Malik.
