The Executive Board of the National Highway Authority (NHA) has given its formal approval for setting up Emergency Response Centers (ERCs) along the national highways in Pakistan. The decision came in a meeting held on Thursday at NHA head office chaired by Chairman Shahid Ashraf Tarar, says a press release issued here. The Chairman informed the meeting that initially these centers would be set up in the remote areas of Balochistan including Dhana Sar and Meena Bazaar along N-50, Kalat, Sorab, Wadh and Kararo along N-25 and Nag and Hoshab along N-85.
He told that these centers would operate 24/7 and would be manned by trained paramedical staff and equipped with necessary first aid facilities along with ambulances and cranes for rescue and relief operations. He said the primary objective is to make travelling along national highways more safe and to ensure timely help to the injured in case of an accident. While selecting the locations of ERCs, main emphasis would be their close proximity to cities and towns. He said effort would be to get the required skilled manpower for the centers from the same area. He hoped the step would help in great way to make travelling more hazardous-free and said that in future the facility would gradually be extended to KPK and other provinces as well.
The chairman further informed the meeting that 3 major motorways had already been completed while work on remaining 12 was in full swing. He said the country's total length of motorways will reach 2,000 km during next 2-3 years once these projects get completed. He told that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed his satisfaction on the performance of the organisation for which the credit also goes to NHA's executive board.-PR
