SC declares Saira Tarar eligible to contest election

Published July 17, 2018 Updated July 17, 2018 08:33pm

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Tuesday declared Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Saira Afzal Tarar eligible to contest the general election for the National Assembly constituency NA-87 Hafizabad.

A two-member bench comprising Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan after hearing the arguments from the the litigants' counsel dismissed the plea seeking disqualification of Saira for allegedly concealing details of her bank accounts in her nomination papers.

The petitioner, Shoukat Ali Bhati, filed the plea in the Supreme Court against the Lahore High Court verdict that allowed Ms Tarar to run for the NA-87. He took the stance that the former minister had concealed details of her properties in the nomination papers.

She neither disclosed the details of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cases pending against her husband nor his source of income, he argued.

He pleaded that the land declared by her was more than what she actually owned and requested the apex court to declare her.

During the course of proceedings, Justice Azmat Saeed observed that the issue would have been important if the bank accounts had a significant amount of money, which could be used to influence the polls.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that It would have been a problem If she had declared less than what she owned. Declaring more than what you own was not a problem, he added.

The court rejected the petition for being non-maintainable and upheld the LHC verdict.
