Former President Lee embarks on visit to Japan

TAIPEI: Former President Lee Teng-hui embarked on a visit to Japan on Friday to attend the unveiling of a monument in commemoration of Taiwanese who died in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

Accompanied by his personal entourage, the 95-year-old Lee arrived in a wheelchair at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at around 3 p.m. and then boarded an EVA Airways flight bound for Okinawa.

The four-day trip was made at the invitation of the Japan-Taiwan Peace Foundation in Naha City, where the former president will be the guest of honor at a dinner hosted jointly by the foundation and the Friends of Lee Teng-Hui

Association in Japan on Saturday, according to Ho Shih-chang, a member of the Lee Teng-hui Foundation in New Taipei.

On Sunday, Lee will attend the unveiling of a war memorial dedicated to the memory of Taiwanese soldiers who died in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled to arrive in Naha Saturday.

The media are watching whether the two will meet.Later in the evening, he will also meet with members of the Association of Overseas Taiwanese in Okinawa at a dinner reception,Ho said.

The trip on Friday was Lee's ninth visit to Japan since his presidency ended in 2000. His last visit to the northeast Asian country was in July 2016.

The former president is scheduled to return to Taiwan on June 25.
