Pervez Musharraf resigns as APML chief

Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf resigned on Friday as chairman of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party.
Musharraf sent his resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). According to the ECP, a disqualified person cannot be the head of a party and it directed the party to remove Musharraf from the leadership. Therefore Musharraf stepped down from his post. Dr Mohammad Amjad has been appointed as the chief of APML, local media reported.
A returning officer had rejected nomination papers of Musharraf which were filed from Chitral for NA-1. The Supreme Court (SC) had allowed Musharraf to file nomination papers for the upcoming general elections on the condition that he would return to Pakistan. The SC had directed him to appear before the court regarding a hearing on his appeal on being disqualified for life by the Peshawar High Court in 2013.
Musharraf given time until tomorrow to appear before SC
However, the top court had withdrawn its order in allowing Musharraf to file nomination papers after Musharraf failed to appear on the deadline given by the SC.
The former president has been in Dubai for nearly two years and has failed to appear despite summons and assurance from the apex court. Court proceedings are in process regarding the case of imposition of extra-constitutional emergency by Musharraf in 2007.
