LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Wednesday adjourned hearing of a contempt plea against former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal till Friday (June 22).
The three-member LHC bench headed by Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, heard the application filed by Munir Ahmad against Ahsan Iqbal over anti-judiciary remarks.
During the course of proceedings, Ahsan Iqbal requested for not screening of clip of his contemptuous speech in the courtroom in the absence of his counsel. He said that his counsel could not appear today due to his engagements in the Supreme Court.
But the bench declined the request and ordered screening of the clip saying that it had been aired on all channels.
After watching the clip on a projector, the bench adjourned the hearing.
The civil miscellaneous application was filed by Munir Ahmad in a pending petition against anti-judiciary speeches by former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and 16 other leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The petitioner submitted that Ahsan Iqbal, then interior minister, and Nawaz Sharif had used derogatory language against the Supreme Court judges on April 25 and 23 respectively and the same was aired by TV channels.
He contended that the respondents' action was barred under Articles 68 of the Constitution but the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) did not take any action despite being empowered by the PEMRA Ordinance.
He submitted that the authority failed to implement provisions of PEMRA ordinance and the court orders of April 16, therefore, contempt proceedings should be initiated against the respondents.
