ISLAMABAD: A six-member caretaker cabinet took oath of office here Tuesday with a pledge to run the affairs of the government during its two-month interim period till the general election on July 25.
President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath of office to the new federal ministers. Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retired) Nasir ul Mulk witnessed the ceremony held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The ministers who took oath of office include Abdullah Hussain Haroon, Muhammad Azam Khan, Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Syed Ali Zafar, Muhammad Yousaf Shaikh and Mrs Roshan Khursheed Bharucha. The portfolios of the ministers will be announced later.
President Mamnoon Hussain congratulated the new ministers on their oath of office and wished them well. He expressed the hope that may Allah Almighty help them serve Pakistan in a befitting manner.
The event, started with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur'an and national anthem, was attended by senior government officials.
In a brief chat with the APP, Dr Shamshad Akhtar, who is likely to head the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs Division, Planning and Development said her priority would be to stabilise the economic situation.
Barrister Syed Ali Zafar said his first priority would be to help the Election Commission of Pakistan in smooth conduct of the general election in a free, fair and transparent manner.
Mrs Roshan Khurshid Barocha said the issue of women and human rights was very close to her heart and she would like to play her part in resolving their issues.
Abdullah Hussain Haroon who would be heading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said he would be picking up the threads after getting an initial briefing at the Foreign Office. To a question, he said he has many fresh ideas for boosting the country's image, however these measures would be taken up under the guidance of the Prime Minister.
To a question about relations with the United States of America, Haroon, who has served the country as its ambassador at the United Nations said, President Donald Trump was not a typical US President and Pakistan needed to understand how to interact with him. He said Pakistan needed to have a strong, united and a cohesive policy to address all issues.
