ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday appointed former federal law minister Ahmer Bilal Soofi as amicus curiae in the Memogate case.

A three-judge bench chaired by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took the decision in that regard while hearing the case against Pakistan's former ambassador in the US Husain Haqqani.

During the course of proceedings, the chief justice addressed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Bashir Memon and said he had heard issuance of red warrants against Haqqani had been refused (by the Interpol).

The FIA Director General informed the court that he had contacted the US officials in that regard, but the Americans said "you too have our man." He did not elaborate the matter.

The FIA DG, further said he had shown the warrants against Haqqani to the US officials informing them that Haqqani had allegedly misappropriated Rs 0.1 billion but in vain.

He apprised the court that five of the Interpol officials were Indians but not a single employee was Pakistani.

Subsequently, the bench appointed Ahmer Bilal Soofi as amicus curiae to assist the court regarding Haqqani’s return to the country and adjourned the case to date in office.
