Accepting his responsibility in Pakistan hockey team's dismal performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup in which it failed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Holland, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary Asif Bajwa has resigned from his post and former Olympian Rana Mujahid Ali, who was the associate secretary, will take his place.
Pakistan had failed to qualify for the hockey World Cup this year for the first time in its history and former hockey players termed this as blackest day in the history of the country's hockey. Defeat in Asia Cup put the PHF under immense pressure due to strong voices over change in the guards in the PHF. After a meeting of Executive Board of the PHF held under the Chairmanship of Qasim Zia President PHF, Bajwa said: "I have resigned to pave the way for others to perform and to contribute for the revival of hockey." He said he faced the criticism of the former Olympians with decency and courage during his tenure. He added he believes that Rana Mujahid will take the Pakistani team to the highest level.
Rana Mujahid said he would utilise his expertise to live up to the expectations of the executive board which has reposed confidence on him by appointing him the secretary of the PHF. He also paid rich tributes to the outgoing secretary and acknowledged his services for the cause of hockey. Earlier, the executive board discussed the performance of the national team in the Asia Cup and laid emphasis on improving national teams' performance in coming event.
Sources said the meeting also discussed some changes to be made in due course of time in the national hockey team management. A four-member fact finding committee was also formed to determine the factors responsible for Pakistan hockey team debacle in the Asia Cup. This committee will be headed by Shahida Jamil and Wasay Jalil its Secretary and Muhammad Saeed Khan and Mansoor ul Hassan as its members. The body will submit its report in ten-day time, which will be sent to Pakistan Sports Board.
