ISLAMABAD: Joint investigation team (JIT) head Wajid Zia Monday informed the court that neither Nawaz Sharif himself nor any witness claimed that the former prime minister remained associated with the business of Gulf Steel Mills.

The Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir picked up the reference for hearing regarding Avenfield property London against Sharif family members, filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB), wherein the counsel for Sharif family continued cross-examining with NAB prosecution witness Wajid Zia.

To a question, Zia stated that the team had written to UAE government to get information regarding the establishment of Gulf Steel Mills but no reply has been received, saying that Tariq Shafi also couldn’t provide the documents regarding the matter.   He informed the court that the JIT's probe was limited to the scope of documents.

Moreover, in response to Haris' questions, Zia confirmed that neither Nawaz himself nor any witness claimed that the former premier remained associated with the Gulf Steel Mills or Ahli Steel Mills. Zia also asserted that there was no proof that Nawaz Sharif benefited from the sale of 75 per cent shares of Gulf Steel Mills.

Deputy NAB Prosecutor Sardar Muzafar interrupted the Haris and said, “you have been asking the same question in different ways since the morning, and it seems you want to get the answer of your choice."

Khwaja Harris replied " First learn the law as prosecution is a tough  job."  However, NAB prosecutor stated that he was learning law from him as he was a senior lawyer.

The hearing was then adjourned until Tuesday when the cross-examination will continue.    It may be mentioned here that Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar reached the court earlier to attend the hearing and later were allowed to leave.
