GILGIT: Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman said Monday parents’ failure to send their children to school would be a punishable offence of six-month jail under proposed legislation being enacted in the legislative assembly.
Addressing a function on parents’ day at a private education here, the GB chief minister said the government accorded top priority to education and legislation was in the final stages to declare failure of parents to send their children to school as punishable act.
He said that the proposed law provided for six months jail term and would be strictly implemented in letter and spirit.
Appreciating the necessitating of education for all, the GB CM said the government was committed to promoting quality education and would provide free education to the children of poor families.
He said merit was being pursued and teachers were being recruited through National Testing Service (NTS).
Moreover, he said free books were also being provided to children as part of efforts to provide easy access to education. He said that Rs 1 billion endowment Fund had been established in the education department to financially support children of poor families and enable them to get free education.
Prompted by social issue of beggary by children, the provincial government had decided to bear all expenses incurred on schooling of children of poor families to evolve them as useful entity of society. In this regard, he added deputy commissioners of all districts had been directed to recommend such children for imitative of the provincial government.
He informed that federal government was paying fee for students seeking higher studies and funds of Rs 370 million had been granted to Karrakuram International University.
He said students who got prominent positions were also being encouraged; adding women university campus would be set up in one year. He said that those private schools were also being monitored that were only fleecing children. He urged parents to help their children in pursuance of education as teachers were not sole responsible for imparting education.
He said a private regulatory authority had been set up to improve system of private sector education by providing them guidance. He said the government raised three million rupees grant to ten million to give them boost.
He said those political elements that were criticizing the PML(N) government, flagrantly flouted merit policy and bribery was on rife in education department during era of past rulers.
He said that enrollment of students in government schools had increased by 30 percent which reflected people’s confidence in the government, adding medical college would also be established in the area.
He said three state-of-the-art technical institutions were also be set up to provide technical education to the youth in line with market’s demand.
