The Sustainable Production Centre (SPC) of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) organised an introductory awareness session on ISO 50001 with the support of GIZ REEE at a local hotel on Thursday. More than 50 participants from textile mills including directors, technical directors, general managers and energy managers attended the seminar.
It may be noted that Aptma has established SPC in Lahore with the support of GIZ to promote cleaner production technologies and energy efficiency best practices in the member mills. The Centre has started providing services on energy efficiency & management, material flow management, environmental management, CSR, renewable energy, policy support and advisory services on energy related matters and capacity development of industry professionals. So far, the SPC Aptma has implemented Energy Management System (EnMS) in more than 35 textile units resulting in energy savings of 10MW equivalent to monetary savings of PKR 391 million.
The Aptma management highlighted that ongoing energy crisis in the country and achievement of member mills through energy conservation and energy efficiency improvement initiatives. It was pointed out that energy is the major cost accounting for 40 per cent in total operational cost so it is imperative to conserve 1MW of electricity rather than to generate it.
In order to be ready for sustainability challenges, SPC Aptma aims to introduce its members to ISO 50001, global standard for energy management system, he concluded. On this occasion, trainer Imran Altaf Bhatti, SCS Manager Bureau Veritas Pakistan briefed the audience about modalities, requirements, importance, benefits, required documentation, legislation and obligations of ISO 50001.
