LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Saturday said that Pakistan was facing challenges of literacy and poverty which could be addressed through quality education to all.
She said that previous governments did nothing for increasing the literacy rate in the country and had they taken any steps for education, the literacy rate in the country would have been 100 percent.
She was addressing a ceremony after inaugurating a new block of Anjuman Hamait-e-Islam Darush Shafqat here. Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal, Justice (Retd) Manzoor Hussain Sial, Dr Mukhtar Khan, Dr Shahida Khan, Ch Zulifiqar Ali, Dr Hajran Tariq Aziz, Tariq Aziz and others were also present.
The minister said that non-governmental organisations were taking marvellous steps for educating orphans and poor children in the country. Particularly, the Pakistan Anjuman Hamait-e-Islam was running 18 educational institutions for orphans, he added.
"The government cannot meet challenges of education alone and new programmes to educate poor and needy children will be started after consultation with non-government organisations," she added.
Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the federal government had also started a project to open Sweet Homes in all cities by using the platform of Pakistan Bait-ul- Mall where quality education would be provided to all needy and special children.
The minister said that Islam was a religion of peace but its real image had been damaged badly in other nations. "We can meet the challenge by granting rights to people as taught by Islam," she added. She announced Rs 500,000 for establishment of a library and a dispensary in the Darush Shafqat.
