LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday ordered Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab to remove barriers and open specific roads in Model Town other localities by midnight.
The bench also sought a compliance report on affidavit in this regard from additional home secretary Punjab, besides observing that it would decide later about barriers installed at Qilla Gujar Singh Police Lines and other specific points.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, passed these orders while hearing several suo motu notices on public welfare issues, here at the Supreme Court Lahore Registry.
Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was also present in the court.
As proceedings commenced, IGP Punjab Arif Nawaz Khan appeared before the bench, on being summoned and apprised about various sensitive locations where barriers were installed for safety purposes.
However, the chief justice remarked that under what law these barriers were installed. How these roads could be blocked, he added.
To which, additional chief secretary home submitted that these barriers were installed due to security threats.
But, the chief justice observed that "We should not follow the road closure policy due to these threats."
He asked the secretary to take extra measures for security of specific places instead of closing the road."I have threats too, you should alert your forces," he added.
The chief justice ordered the IGP Punjab for removal of barriers surrounding these places while seeking a compliance report.
