Siemens Pakistan in its ongoing campaign to offer solutions to the energy needs of the country organised two important seminars. The first was organised by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, LUMS School of Science and Technology in collaboration with Siemens Pakistan on the topic 'Smart Grid solutions and renewable energy for Pakistan's growing energy needs in the country.'
The second was a 2-day seminar on 'Smart Grid Systems and solutions to optimise transmission and distribution networks in Pakistan' which was attended by Pepco/NTDC MD Rasul Khan Mahsud, Lesco CEO Sharafat Ali Sial, IESCO CEO Javed Pervaiz, general managers, chief engineers and officials from NTDC and Distribution companies in Pakistan.
In seminars Aqeel Ahmed, Vice President Smart Grid Siemens Pakistan, informed that one of the Smart Grid concepts was Demand Management System (DMS) which required that 'Load follows Generation'. This concept was not new to many Pakistanis, as we use residential power generator during load shedding.
He informed that developing countries had a growing demand of electricity but at the same time they also wasted a significant amount of its generated electricity in the process of transmission, distribution and inefficient consumption. "This wastage can be avoided using the available Smart Grid technologies and can be useful to reduce the power supply and demand gap in the country."
He informed that Siemens apart from supplying Smart Grid systems and solutions had also developed a phase wise consultancy programme to transform the existing power grids to smart grids. Siemens Smart Grid offers end to end solutions connecting transmission, distribution and industrial/consumer networks.
Siemens Pakistan is also actively supporting industrial units in the country to develop an optimised power network and Demand Management System and actively developing solutions for Smart metering. Irfan Ahmed, Head of renewable energy systems Siemens Pakistan, gave presentation on the potential of solar and wind energy and its integration into existing electrical network of Pakistan. He discussed important issues and presented various solutions.
Dr Michael Schwan, Head of Network Consultancy Siemens PTI (Power Technologies International), Germany, talked about network planning strategies for distribution companies with special focus on "Loss calculations and minimisation, and reliability study of electrical networks."-PR
