Calendar year 2012 quota for export of animals approved

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has approved quota for quarter-wise distribution of exportable animals to different countries particularly Iran and Afghanistan. Sources told Business Recorder that the Ministry of National Food Security and Research has approved the quarter-wise quota for export of animals during the calendar year 2012.
Customs officials would allow export of animals as per admissible quota to Iran and Afghanistan. The quota has been fixed to ensure that smuggling of animals should not take place and only a specific quantity should be exported from customs stations near border areas.
As per quota approved by Ministry of National Food Security and Research, during first quarter (January-March 2012), the number of export quantity of cattle/buffalo has been fixed at 5000 through Karachi/Gwadar, 2000 Quetta and 5000 Peshawar. The export quantity of sheep/goats would be 8000 through Karachi/Gwadar, 1000 Quetta and 1000 Peshawar. During the second quarter (April-June 2012), 13000 cattle/buffalo through Karachi/Gwadar, 8000 Quetta and 15000. While, 28000 sheep/goats via Karachi/Gwadar, 1000 Quetta and 1000 Peshawar along with 575, 125 camels respectively through Karachi/Gwadar and Quetta have been approved to be exported during this time.
The ministry has approved for the third quarter (July-September 2012), 13000 cattle/buffalo to be exported through Karachi/Gwadar, 8000 Quetta whereas 15000 through Peshawar. Sheep/goats to be exported are 28000 via Karachi/Gwadar, 1000 Quetta, and 1000 Peshawar. Camels allowed to be exported are 575 via Karachi/Gwadar and 125 through Quetta.
Sources added that for the fourth quarter (October-December 2012), 13000 cattle/buffalo have been allowed to be exported through Karachi/Gwadar, 8000 Quetta and 15000 via Peshawar. Sheep/goats that have been allowed to be exported are 28000 from Karachi/Gwadar, 1000 via Quetta and 1000 through Peshawar. Similarly, the ministry has allowed export of 575 camels through Karachi/Gwadar and 125 via Quetta.
Sources added that the leftover animals of the previous quarter from the point of exit will automatically add to the respective station in the following quarters of the year, but the remaining animals at the end of the calendar year will lapse automatically and will not be added to the next calendar year's allocation. Animal Quarantine Department, Karachi may be authorised to shift animals from one station to the other, if found suitable for keeping export flow smooth.
