Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Senator, Farooq H Naek, who has vacated the office of chairman Senate, is likely to replace Maula Bux Chandio as Law Minister, it is learnt. According to senior PPP sources the decision was taken in a meeting of the PPP Core Committee, which was held last Saturday at the Presidency.
This matter had been discussed in detail in the meeting because Naek's services would be required if ever the need arose to defend the President's immunity before the Supreme Court. Naek, it must be recalled, had fought several cases of the President when he was in jail.
Naek's PPP critics told this scribe on condition of anonymity that he was removed as Senate Chairman because he had advised President Asif Ali Zardari that there would be no repercussions if a letter was written to the Swiss court under the direction of the Supreme Court. This reportedly angered the President.
Farooq Naek could not be contacted by this correspondent, however, Law Minister Maula Bux Chandio when asked by the media stated that he was not aware of any decisions taken in this regard. Sources revealed that the Law Ministry is currently being run by the former Law Minister Babar Awan and his brother serving as an Adviser to the Law Minister. In case Farooq Naek is made the Law Minister the current hold of the Awan brothers on the ministry is likely to end.
