The Food Department will commence wheat procurement in Multan from April 15 and the department is targeted to purchase 1.99 lac ton wheat from the farmers. Chairing a meeting to review arrangements for wheat procurement operation, the district co-ordination officer Multan Mudassar Riaz Malik on Friday directed concerned officials to form supervisory committee till March 31 so that the procurement drive could be launched on time.
"These committees will keep vigil on procurement process and address the complaints of farmers in time," he added. He asked the assistant commissioners and revenue officers to evolve Khasra Girdawari lists of all areas, within one week so that arrangements could be made at nearby centres of Food Department.
Earlier, while briefing the DCO, the EDO agriculture told that 16 procurement centres were established for the drive and arrangements were being finalised at these centres. He added that the wheat was sown on less area than last year but the size of crop was likely to be equal to previous year's production. "This year wheat is sown on 4.67 lac acres while the previous year's total stand at 4.87 lac acres."
