Google honoured German-Jewish physicist Heinrich Hertz on February 22 with a coloured wavy design on its homepage as a homage to his work on electromagnetic waves. The tribute came on what would have been the 155th birthday of the scientist whose work in proving the existence of electromagnetic waves back in the 1880's paved the way for the invention of radio, television, radar and all other forms of wireless communication.
The scientist, who was born in Hamburg on February 22, 1857 also lent his name to the metric unit Hertz (Hz), which stands for the number of cycles per second of any kind of phenomena, and is frequently used to describe radio and audio waves.
Hertz died in 1894 at the age of 36 from Wegener's granulomatosis, a rare disease that results in the inflammation of the blood vessels. His family fled Germany in the 1930's following the rise to power of Adolf Hitler.
